Battle of the Snipers: Manticore M8 vs. M9

Precision Hunting in Iron & Trash

When the iron gets thick and the trash targets outnumber the good ones 100-to-1, a large coil becomes a liability. You need a surgeon's scalpel. Minelab offers two distinct "small" coils for the Manticore, but they behave very differently:

  • The Elliptical Sniper: Minelab M8 (8" x 5.5")
  • The Round Scout: Minelab M9 (9" Round)

Quick Specs Comparison

Feature Minelab M8 Minelab M9
Shape Elliptical (8" x 5.5") Round (9")
Profile Narrow & Agile Classic Round
Waterproof 5m (16ft) 5m (16ft)
Separation Superior (Razor Sharp) Excellent
Best For Iron-Infested Ruins / Stubble Mineralized Soil / Woods

1. The Minelab M8: The "Iron Assassin"

The M8 is widely considered the "must-have" accessory for Manticore owners. Its elliptical shape (football-shaped) is critical. Because it is only 5.5 inches wide, it can slip between two iron nails to find the coin hiding in the middle.

Why buy it? It is virtually weightless on the end of the shaft. In thick stubble (corn or wheat stalks), the narrow profile slides right between the rows where round coils get stuck. It provides the sharpest, fastest recovery speed sensation the Manticore can offer.

2. The Minelab M9: The "Mineral Master"

The M9 is a traditional round coil. While it gives up a tiny bit of separation compared to the M8, it gains stability. Round coils naturally handle highly mineralized ground (hot soil) slightly better than elliptical ones.

Depth Bonus: Because the M9 is round and has more surface area than the M8, it will punch deeper—especially on coin-sized targets. Think of it as a "hybrid" that is small enough for trash but deep enough for general hunting.

Detailed Comparison

Extreme Trash Separation

Winner: Minelab M8
In a site carpeted with nails (like an old cellar hole), the M8 is unbeatable. Its narrow beam width laser-focuses on good targets.

Depth Capabilities

Winner: Minelab M9
The M9 offers a noticeable depth advantage over the M8, bridging the gap between a sniper coil and the standard M11 stock coil.

Woods & Brush Hunting

Winner: Minelab M9
Round coils are less likely to snag on vines and twigs than the pointed ends of an elliptical coil. The M9 glides over forest floors smoothly.

The Verdict

Buy the Minelab M8 if:
You hunt "carpet of nails" sites, demolition zones, or thick farm stubble. It is the ultimate separation tool and transforms the Manticore into a laser.

Buy the Minelab M9 if:
You hunt tight spaces (like woods or rocky streams) but still need decent depth. If you find the stock M11 too heavy but the M8 too shallow, the M9 is your "Goldilocks" coil.
